The AGV Pista GP R3 Brings a Six-Fold Concussion Risk Reduction to MotoGP

AGV’s new Pista GP R3 helmet debuted at the San Marino Grand Prix with the Sphera safety system, cutting concussion risk six-fold in independent testing.

The AGV Pista GP R3 made its race debut during Friday practice at the 2026 San Marino and Rimini Riviera Grand Prix, worn by AGV’s full MotoGP, Moto2, and Moto3 lineup at Misano. It’s the most significant evolution of the Pista GP platform since the helmet launched in 2011, built to meet the FIM’s newest FRHPhe-02 standard and centered on a genuinely new approach to oblique-impact protection.

The AGV Pista GP R3’s Sphera Safety System

The headline innovation is AGV Sphera, powered by RLS (Release Layer System), developed specifically to reduce rotational acceleration to the brain during oblique impacts, one of the leading causes of severe brain injury. The system uses an outer shell separated from the helmet’s main shell by hundreds of microspheres, designed to detach in a controlled manner on impact and dissipate energy before it transmits as rotational force to the rider’s head.

Independent testing at the Aragon Engineering Research Institute at the University of Zaragoza found a six-fold reduction in concussion risk compared to a configuration without the Sphera system. Dainese Group CEO Angel Sanchez credited the partnership behind it directly. “We are proud to be the first to bring this revolutionary technology to a motorcycle helmet,” Sanchez said of the collaboration with RLS, a UK-based safety startup.

Aerodynamics and Comfort on the AGV Pista GP R3

Beyond the Sphera system, AGV rebuilt the AGV Pista GP R3’s aerodynamics around a detail most helmet redesigns skip entirely: the cornering phase, when a rider’s head stays turned toward the apex and exit rather than facing straight ahead. The spoiler was redesigned in both size and lateral shape specifically to cut drag in that position, work validated in the wind tunnel and then on-track by the MotoGP riders who helped develop it.

Ventilation got its own overhaul, with new Grilamid air vents combining plastic and carbon fiber for strength without added weight, plus redesigned rear vents that speed up heat dissipation. A more ergonomic interior and a thicker, more securely retained visor round out the changes. Despite all of it, AGV says the Pista GP R3 weighs no more than its predecessor.

What MotoGP Riders Say About the AGV Pista GP R3

Honda HRC’s Luca Marini called the leap forward “enormous, in every respect,” pointing specifically to the rotational-force protection, ventilation, and cornering aerodynamics as the areas that mattered most to him during development.

Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi, who worked on the helmet from the earliest stages of its development, said knowing he’s better protected “literally takes one less thing off your mind” at 360 km/h. VR46’s Franco Morbidelli called it simply “incredible,” adding that the Pista’s challenge has always been improving on something already iconic.

The Pista GP RR Mono White and the earlier Pista GP RR Oro both carried the platform’s reputation into recent years, and the R3 is the version those helmets were building toward. AGV hasn’t announced consumer pricing or a retail release date yet, a detail worth watching now that the helmet has proven itself at the level it was actually designed for.

Rotational-impact protection has been the industry’s next real safety frontier for years, mostly addressed through MIPS-style liner systems rather than a shell that’s designed to controllably fail. If Sphera holds up the way the lab data suggests, every other manufacturer building race-level protection now has a new number to match, and a six-fold reduction is a hard one to shrug off.
