The 2027 Thai Grand Prix will open next year’s MotoGP season, marking the third consecutive year Buriram’s Chang International Circuit has hosted the championship’s curtain-raiser. Race weekend runs March 5–7, 2027, and this one carries more weight than a typical opener: it will be the first competitive event held under MotoGP’s new technical regulations for the 2027–2031 cycle.
Why the 2027 Thai Grand Prix Marks a New MotoGP Era
Every regulation cycle resets the competitive order, and this one is bigger than most — the field will race under an entirely new technical framework for the 2027–2031 seasons, with the next generation of MotoGP machinery hitting the track in race conditions for the first time. Choosing the 2027 Thai Grand Prix to debut that era puts the spotlight on a venue that has already proven it can handle the moment.
Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of MotoGP Group, said Buriram has “consistently delivered one of the best events on our calendar,” calling it the right stage to launch the sport’s new technical era.

How Thailand Took Over MotoGP’s Season-Opening Slot
Qatar held the season-opener role for years before its Grand Prix shifted to a November date, opening the door for Buriram. The 2027 Thai Grand Prix will be Thailand’s third straight turn at the front of the calendar, following its debut as opener in 2025 and its repeat in 2026, when a record crowd of 228,228 turned out over the weekend and Marco Bezzecchi took the win.
That result carries forward into the new era, too — Bezzecchi is part of Aprilia’s all-Italian 2027 lineup alongside Francesco Bagnaia, meaning the rider who won the most recent Buriram opener will also be on the grid when the 2027 Thai Grand Prix kicks off the new regulations cycle at the same circuit.
What Comes Next on the 2027 MotoGP Calendar
The 2027 Thai Grand Prix is the first confirmed date on next year’s schedule, with the rest of the calendar still being finalized. For a sense of how the current season is structured before the new cycle begins, the 2026 calendar spans 22 races across five continents. Additional 2027 rounds, along with details on the new technical regulations themselves, are expected to be announced in the coming months.
