MotoGP Awards 2024

Let’s face it. The official MotoGP awards gala is boring. I mean, everybody looks nice. But damn it! You already know who’s getting what. How much fun is that? That’s like your significant other taking you shopping, buying your Christmas present, and wrapping it in front of you. Well, those of you who know, know that I do things a little differently. These are the awards they should be handing out, AKA the 2024 SBI MotoGP Awards.

Of course, it’s all in good fun, so don’t go gettin’ all butt hurt if you don’t agree. In other words, why so serious? So, without further adieu, here are 2024 MotoGP Awards, as I see them.

Don’t Call It a Comeback – Comeback Rider of the Year Award:
This one was easy. Marc Marquez. After contemplating retirement, the former Babyface Assassin came back in a big way and shook shit up. He gave MotoGP the shot in the arm it desperately needed, and now GP has fans and foes salivating like a Pavlov experiment in anticipation of The 2025 Season. 

Survey Says? – Greatest Business Decision Award:
This award goes to Dorna. Sprint races are a stroke of genius, and they helped Jorge Martin win the 2024 MotoGP Championship. It’s not easy to upset traditionalists, but in order for a sport to grow, you have to make it appealing to the non-fanatics. Now, all sessions matter, and to that, I say, “Bravo, Dorna. Bravo!”

Ain’t Nuthin’ but Tha Dogg in Me – The Dawg Award:
This award speaks for itself. Who’s got that dawg in’ em!  Surprisingly, it goes to Pecco Bagnia. Don’t let his laid-back attitude fool you. As dem country boys say, “That dawg can hunt!”  What impressed me about Pecco was that every time his back was against the wall, he came back swinging. When he had to win, he won! Now that’s a dawg!

There’s A New Kid In Town – Rookie of The Year Award:
Pedro Acosta. This kid is what the sport needs. Young. Talented. He gets it! He knows what it’s about. You can’t ask for more. When the rookie outperforms the factory boys, that tells you all you need to know. When he starts winning, the championship will just get better. Can you imagine a Marquez, Acosta, Bagnia Rivalry? We can only hope.

Not Like Us – Greatest Rivalry Award:
Jorge Martin versus Pecco Bagnia. These two raised the level so much that it seemed like, at times, they were the only ones on the track. To that, we say thank you for your service!

A Day That Will Live In Infamy – Greatest Race of The Season Award:
While Le Mans, Phillip Island, and COTA were nice, nothing compares to Sepang 2024. It was the greatest four laps of racing I’ve seen in a while. Bagnia had to win, and Martin could’ve chosen to take the afternoon off. But that’s not what champions do, and these two provided us with a fight that Hagler versus Hearns would’ve been proud of. And to that, we say, well done, boyz!

Look At All The Lonely People – Top Manufacturer Award:
Ducati. This award is special because Ducati is being picked on because of their dominance on the grid. Nobody said that of Honda and Yamaha when they were shutting shit down. Why Ducati? Who knows? But that’s what that hard work does. Congrats, Ducati!

Are You Not Entertained Award:
This award goes to the Champ, Jorge Martin. Every weekend, it seemed he won the sprint race and then provided drama on Sunday. Last year, he was good. This year, he’s the Champion! Salute to the Champ for not giving up when the chips were down and becoming only the second independent rider to win the crown.
