The selection follows directly from MotoGP’s 2026 return to Brazil, where a sold-out Grand Prix weekend in Goiânia drew nearly 150,000 spectators despite some track-surface issues during the event. That turnout reaffirmed Brazil’s standing as one of the championship’s most passionate markets, and Rio’s selection extends that momentum into a bigger stage.
MotoGP Group CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta framed the choice in terms of what the Season Launch has become for the sport: “The MotoGP Season Launch has become one of the defining moments of the year for our championship, bringing together every team, rider and manufacturer as we begin a new season.”
The format has real economic weight behind it too — the 2026 Kuala Lumpur launch reportedly generated more than $7 million in economic value for its host city.
What to Expect at the MotoGP 2027 Season Launch
Every MotoGP team, rider, and manufacturer will attend, alongside a program built around Rio’s own identity: internationally recognized artists performing with Brazilian musicians, fan activations, and live production staged against the Botafogo Beach and Sugarloaf Mountain backdrop.
Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere pointed to the city’s broader landmarks in describing the event’s reach, noting that “from Botafogo Beach to Christ the Redeemer, this event will showcase the very best of Rio de Janeiro to millions of fans around the world.”
The MotoGP 2027 Season Launch Sets Up a New Technical Era
The timing puts Rio directly ahead of the season’s real starting point: the opening round at the Buriram International Circuit in Thailand, March 5-7, which will mark the first competitive race under MotoGP’s new 850cc-era regulations.
A beachfront celebration in front of a country that just sold out its own Grand Prix is a fitting way to introduce a grid running genuinely different machinery for the first time in years — the kind of moment that works better as spectacle than as a press conference, which is presumably why MotoGP keeps investing more into these launches with each edition.
