In a historic demonstration at the Suzuka Circuit, Kawasaki Motors Ltd. unveiled the world’s first public showcase of a hydrogen internal combustion engine (ICE) motorcycle, making Kawasaki the pioneer in the class.
The development of the hydrogen ICE motorcycle stems from Kawasaki’s visionary research initiated in March 2023. After rigorous testing, the culmination led to a spectacular public demonstration during the 2024 Suzuka 8-Hour FIM World Endurance race. Powered by a hydrogen engine derived from the potent 998cc inline four supercharged engines found in Kawasaki’s Ninja H2, the hydrogen ICE motorcycle showcases detailed modifications enabling direct injection of hydrogen fuel into the cylinders, as well as a purpose-built chassis to accommodate hydrogen fuel canisters and an onboard supply system.
The Kawasaki hydrogen ICE motorcycle exhilarates like twisting the throttle on a fuel-and-fire machine. It also has the eco-conscious advantage of emitting mainly water and minimal CO2, which embodies a noteworthy step toward sustainable mobility and environmental stewardship.
Kawasaki plans to provide a carbon-neutral option to motorcyclists by the early 2030s. The availability of these motorcycles will be contingent upon the development of hydrogen fuel infrastructure and legal regulations in various countries. Kawasaki Motors’ membership in the HySE (Hydrogen Small Mobility & Engine Technology) research association emphasizes its dedication to driving innovation in hydrogen technology with active engagement in fundamental research on hydrogen engines, filling systems, and fuel supply systems for hydrogen-powered small mobility vehicles, including motorcycles.
In line with its ceaseless pursuit of customer and societal well-being, Kawasaki Motors is unwavering in its dedication to achieving carbon neutrality. By exploring every avenue to deliver joy and happiness to individuals intersecting with their products and services, Kawasaki Motors embodies a profound commitment to a sustainable future.
