Ground has broken on the NJMP Thunderbolt Renovation project that promises to bring fresh updates to a modern classic road-racing circuit.
In its vibrant 16-season history, the Thunderbolt Circuit at New Jersey Motorsports Park has carved a niche for itself in the motorsports world. Since its inception in August 2008, it’s been a playground for professionals and enthusiasts, a classroom for budding talents, and a stage for unforgettable races. Brad Scott, President and COO of New Jersey Motorsports Park, commented on the significance of the NJMP Thunderbolt Renovation project, saying that over a year of meticulous planning has led them to this pivotal moment—a testament to the combined efforts of many.
Phase 1 of the process promises thorough updates from the milling and removal of the current track surface to the renovations of curbing and alterations in the Turn 1 profile. By early March 2024, Thunderbolt will return to life with a brand-new look and feel. Phase 2, slated to begin post-2024 season, will introduce two alternative course configurations.
Scott added that while the track’s core facility renovations are paramount, they collaborate diligently with state officials and the DEP to ensure that off-track modifications meet required standards.
Nostalgia has its place in this renovation too. To commemorate the original track, enthusiasts can own a piece of Thunderbolt history. Mementos made with millings from the original surface will be available online.
