KTM has engineered its new Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) gearbox to maintain traditional gearbox proportions while keeping the weight within the same range as standard transmissions.

The KTM Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) allows riders to choose between a manual shifting operation in M Mode—without a clutch—or a completely automated transmission in A Mode. Once the first gear is engaged, forward drive is initiated by raising the engine speed. At this point, the centrifugal clutch engages and sets the motorcycle in motion. This system makes starting on a slope, pulling away, stopping, and slow-speed maneuvering much more manageable, particularly on larger motorcycles. Additionally, it eliminates the possibility of stalling the engine.

The AMT features a gear sequence of P – N – 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5 – 6, with ‘P’ denoting PARK. This PARK position prevents unwanted rolling by engaging a locking pawl within the gearbox. Both PARK and NEUTRAL positions can only be selected using the shifting paddle on the handlebar switch cube, whether the engine is running or not, and the front or rear brake must be applied to engage first gear.

The gearbox is controlled via the ECU and Transmission Control Unit. Shifts are initiated by an electromechanical shift actuator that turns the shift drum, resulting in gear changes that take just 50 milliseconds—comparable to traditional transmissions using a quick shifter.

In Manual or M Mode, riders can purposefully shift gears using the traditional gear lever on the left side of the engine or with the paddle shift on the left switch cube.

The AMT system also provides a wide range of setup configurations. SHIFTING modes work in unison with RIDE modes, allowing for individual preferences regardless of the application.

KTM’s Automated Manual Transmission represents a significant leap forward in the brand’s pursuit of providing tomorrow’s motorcycle technology to riders today, much like Honda’s E-Clutch system.

The KTM AMT will initially be available on selected upcoming models, with more options being added to the range in the coming years.
