The 2024 BMW R 1300 GS – a game-changing Enduro bike that combines a powerful engine, cutting-edge technology, and a rich heritage.

BMW Motorrad unveiled the much-anticipated 2024 BMW R 1300 GS. The heir to a proud lineage that began with the R 80 G/S more than 43 years ago, the new model is poised to take the helm of the touring enduro segment, which BMW has dominated for decades.

There’s a lot to unpack here, but let’s start with the heart of the matter: the engine. BMW has reimagined its iconic two-cylinder boxer engine for the 2024 BMW R 1300 GS. Slimmed down yet more robust, this 1,300 cc behemoth delivers a staggering 145 hp and 110 lb-ft of torque. Riders will appreciate the compact design due to the new gearbox placement and camshaft drive arrangement. Simply put, it’s the most potent BMW boxer engine in production.

The chassis hasn’t been overlooked. We see a significant weight-saving of 26 pounds, compared to its predecessor. This has been achieved through the use of a steel, sheet metal shell main frame and a die-cast aluminum rear frame. BMW’s EVO Telelever and EVO Paralever suspension systems ensure a ride that’s both agile and comfortable. The system ensures that the handlebar movement remains uninfluenced by the suspension, leading to a more direct and connected feel while steering. The rear suspension, too, gets a facelift with the revised Evo Paralever, resulting in better traction and a stiffer connection.

But the real magic happens with the optional electronic Dynamic Suspension Adjustment (DSA). It brings to the table a dynamic adjustment of the front and rear damping, adjusting the spring rate based on the selected riding mode, current riding conditions, and maneuvers. It’s a game-changer, ensuring optimal performance and comfort across diverse terrains and situations.

In diving deeper into the engine’s intricacies, it’s evident that BMW has pushed the envelope. The increase in displacement, resulting from an enlarged cylinder bore and a new crankshaft with reduced stroke, offers riders unparalleled power and torque. Whether you’re zipping solo or cruising with a passenger, the 2024 BMW R 1300 GS guarantees exhilarating performance. The engine also boasts of efficiency, matching its predecessor’s fuel consumption, despite its power surge.

Riders will appreciate the seamless integration of the six-speed gearbox and clutch within the engine housing. Notably, the gearbox has moved from its traditional spot behind the engine to underneath it, ensuring better weight distribution and improved handling.

One of the most innovative features in the 2024 BMW R 1300 GS is the BMW ShiftCam technology. It varies the valve timing and valve stroke on the intake side, ensuring an efficient fuel-air mixture and, ultimately, a more effective combustion process.

Its 2-in-1 stainless steel exhaust system, integrated with the groundbreaking BMW ShiftCam technology, ensures an expansive power and torque curve. Whether on winding backroads, challenging off-roads, or extended highway stretches, this bike promises a thrilling, responsive ride. And it’s not just about sheer power. The R 1300 GS stands out as an environmentally conscious powerhouse, exceeding current exhaust standards and prepping for future norms.

The motorcycle’s advanced features extend to its riding modes. From the “Rain” and “Road” modes that adapt to diverse road conditions to the “Eco” mode maximizing fuel efficiency, the 2024 BMW R 1300 GS is a masterclass in versatility. With the optional “Riding Modes Pro,” riders get even more granularity with modes like “Dynamic”, “Dynamic Pro”, and “Enduro Pro,” allowing for personalization to the minutest detail. Engine drag torque control (MSR), a standard feature, acts as a safety net, preventing unstable riding conditions that can arise due to sudden decelerations or aggressive downshifting.

With a twin disc brake system combined with BMW Motorrad Full Integral ABS Pro, riders can rely on precise braking power. This integrated braking system, allowing the hand and foot levers to activate both front and rear brakes simultaneously, ensures optimal safety. Dynamic Brake Control further enhances braking efficiency by reducing engine torque during intense stops, ensuring shorter braking distances.

For the new R 1300 GS, wheel choices are expanded with three available designs in different sizes. Depending on the model, riders can opt for lightweight cast aluminum wheels or cross-spoke wheels crafted for off-road adventures. Additionally, BMW introduces Enduro forged wheels, optimized for off-roading, boasting a weight advantage for agility and performance.

Ergonomics remains a pivotal focus for BMW. The R 1300 GS promotes a sporty yet relaxed riding position, thanks to the ergonomic triangle design comprising handlebars, seat, and footrests. Adjustability is the keyword here; riders can personalize their riding experience using the optional handlebar riser, seats in various heights, and distinct footrest designs.

“With the new Riding Assistant featuring Active Cruise Control, Front Collision Warning and Lane Change Warning, we offer a safety package in the new R 1300 GS that is unprecedented in this segment,” Said Markus Hamm of Functional Development Control Systems BMW Motorrad. The new R 1300 GS does just that with its Riding Assistant, featuring Active Cruise Control, Front Collision Warning, and Lane Change Warning. These features collaborate to ensure a safer, more intuitive ride, especially in challenging conditions or traffic scenarios.

BMW’s commitment to safety doesn’t end there. The bike now flaunts a matrix full LED headlamp, enhancing visibility in varied conditions. For those seeking even more advanced lighting tech, the optional “Headlight Pro” provides adaptive cornering light, ensuring the light beam adjusts according to the lean angle for superior road illumination.

Riders can also benefit from the Comfort seating options with integrated heating for both rider and passenger seats, ensuring a cozy ride even in colder climes. The integration of the USB and 12-volt sockets alongside a ventilated smartphone charging compartment ensures your devices remain charged on the go. To further the goal of weight efficiency, the R 1300 GS houses a lightweight lithium-ion battery, saving a significant 5.5 lbs, and a unique Battery Guard function to monitor the charge status.

BMW’s R 1300 GS boosts safety with its “Intelligent Emergency Call” system, providing rapid assistance during accidents or emergencies. Moreover, its new Service Assistant ensures automatic service reminders, sending relevant data to the BMW Motorrad Connected App. The app can also monitor the battery’s state through the Battery Guard function, informing users when the battery charge is low.

Completing the package, BMW’s standard Connectivity feature, paired with a 6.5-inch full-color TFT screen, offers easy access to vehicle functions and connectivity options. Whether you’re navigating unfamiliar terrains or keeping track of your performance stats, the R 1300 GS ensures you’re always connected and in control.

The design of BMW’s R 1300 GS has evolved to combine classic GS elements with modern touches, with a focus on compactness and weight efficiency. Some key design features include a flatter tank that gives the bike a sleek and dynamic appearance, an iconic GS headlamp that has been redesigned using LED matrix technology, and a modular design with a die-cast aluminum rear frame, which allows for customization. The R 1300 GS is available in several models, including the Basic variant, Triple Black, GS Trophy, and Option 719 Tramuntana.

The Basic variant has a muscular appearance and is painted in Light White solid paint. The Triple Black variant is all black and features a luggage carrier, electrically adjustable high windshield, and comfortable seats. The GS Trophy variant is designed for racing and has a Racing Blue Metallic tone with red and white decals. This model is focused on off-road adventures and comes with radiator guards and cross-spoke wheels. Finally, the Option 719 Tramuntana is a sophisticated and elegant option that features gold cross-spoke wheels with black components and a high-quality paint finish. Each model retains the signature GS features while reflecting unique styles and purposes, making the R 1300 GS range versatile and appealing for various riders.
